3300 Cups of Noah’s Pudding to Celebrate the Richness of Diversity in Montreal
Dialog Foundation shared thousands of cups of Noah’s Pudding – more than 3300 – this year to commemorate the tradition of richness, diversity, dialog, and sharing built on Noah’s legacy. Between 27 January 2008 and 12 February 2008, Dialog Foundation volunteers distributed more than 3300 cups of Noah’s Pudding in universities, churches, NGOs, businesses, community centers and schools in Montreal under the direction of our Executive Director Fehmi Kala and General Secretary Hasan Topal.

“Noah’s pudding” (or Ashura) is a sweet dessert prepared of mixed nuts and fruits in a pudding texture in the Middle East in remembrance of the event of the Noah’s ark; and the pudding is distributed to friends, family, and neighbors. Ashura or Noah’s pudding is made up of 40 different ingredients. It is more than a thousand-year-old tradition celebrating the landing of Noah's ark. It is a common tradition among Christians, Jews and Muslims especially in the Middle East and the tradition still continues today.

For Turkish Muslim Canadians, Noah’s pudding also symbolizes ultimate richness and diversity representing Quebec and Canada. It symbolizes different cultures living together peacefully in harmony with preserving original identities. Wheat, white beans, hazelnuts, figs, chickpeas, raisins, almonds, peanuts, apricots, sugar, water, walnuts, pomegranate, chestnuts, milk, pine nuts, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries are brought together in harmony. Therefore, the pudding symbolizes democracy, multiculturalism and tolerance. It is not a melting pot; since the ingredients are not melted and they all preserve their unique tastes. Each of the ingredients preserves its unique taste but it is also a part of the whole wonderful taste. Ashura represents the global peace model and symbolizes multicultural spiritual democracy that we need more than ever today. Canada is like a cup of Noah’s pudding as it embodies and contains the diversity and richness of almost all human civilizations.
